[Also in Division F4] Iron is obtained from its ores by charging to a reaction zone pellets of a certain minimum size containing iron oxide together with pieces of carbonaceous reducing agent of a maximum size less than the minimum size of the ore pellets, advancing the pellets through the zone until a major part of the combined iron has been reduced in the solid state, separating from the charge all fine material including substantially all the reducing agent, and advancing the coarse charge into a further zone where melting occurs to form metal and slag layers which may be separately discharged from the reaction vessel or may be separated after discharge. As illustrated Fig. 2 (not shown) the ore pellets, which may also contain fluxes are charged to rotary furnace (1). Fluxes and/or alloying additions may be made through pipes (11, 16) and fine material is separated by screens (13) and discharged from the furnace. Further heat is supplied by burners (17) and (22) causing the coarse particles to melt, refining of the metal being brought about by intermixing with the slag as a result of the furnace rotation. Further additions may be blown into the bath by means of a lance (124), (Fig. 10).</p>
