<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data reading/collecting apparatus for extracting data read by a bar code reader to the outside, and for investigating a time when an investigation target person goes out without imposing any labor on the investigation target person. <P>SOLUTION: At the time of making merchandise purchase circumstance investigation, an investigation target person is made to carry a bar code reader 1 when he or she goes out, and a data collection machine 2 is installed in his or her house. Each time purchasing merchandise 4 in a place where he/she has gone, the investigation target person makes the bar code reader 1 read a bar code 4a attached to the merchandise, and store it in an incorporated memory. When coming back to his or her house, the investigation target person places the bar code reader 1 in a place where it can communicate with the data collection machine 2. The bar code reader 1 periodically tries to communicate with an interval such as one minute interval through infrared communication, and when its communication is established, the bar code reader 1 transmits the storage data of the incorporated memory to the data collection machine 2.
