PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new cell culture medium suitable for the primary culture of insect cells, an insect-originating water-soluble chitin subjected only to deacetylation as chemical modification, and a method for creating an insect culture cell strain in a short period using the primary culture medium for insect cells and the insect-originating water-soluble chitin.

SOLUTION: Disclosed are the primary culture medium for insect cells comprising a lactalbumin hydrolysate, a yeast extract and a tryptose phosphate broth as protein extracts and polyvinylpyrrolidone as a viscous auxiliary agent, and the insect-originating water-soluble chitin subjected only to deacetylation as chemical modification.
