PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart high hardness in a certain degree to a protective film for the surface of a metal working tool such as a die and a cutting tool for improving the appearance of a molding, further, to improve its lubricity, and to reduce its wettability as well. SOLUTION: The protective film for the surface of a metal working tool is composed of a mixed film or a stacked film of the nitride of a transition metal element and carbon having an amorphous structure and deposited on a metal surface by a vapor phase thin film deposition process.
