PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new wavelength conversion technique which employs neither electric circuit nor mechanical movable part and thereby is neither affected by electromagnetic interference, nor becomes a cause of electromagnetic interference, and which utilizes a light beam with a wide range of wavelength selection, and further has high durability. SOLUTION: The wavelength converter is equipped with: a signal light beam input portion (12) to make a pulsed signal light beam (14) with a specified wavelength incident; a light source (13) for a light beam for conversion to emit a light beam (15) for conversion with a wavelength different from that of the signal light beam (14); a thermal lens forming means (11) having a light absorption layer film with a wavelength band absorbing the signal light beam (14) and transmitting the light beam (15) for conversion and exhibiting a thermal lens effect; and a conversion light beam selecting means emitting, as the light beam for conversion, only the light beam for conversion emitted with an angle larger than an usual angle of aperture out of the emitted light beams for conversion.
