PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light amount controller and a light amount control method which are used for an optical scanner for scanning on a face to be scanned with a plurality of beams so as to control the light amount of each beam, and by which the light amount of each beam can be controlled to a prescribed light amount corresponding to the number of the beams. SOLUTION: A partial beam in a plurality of the beams is simultaneously lit, during the line APC operation per one main scanning period. The plurality of beams, including at least one beam in the beams lit last time, are re-lit in the next control during the same main scanning period. The light amount control is executed plural number of times during the same main scanning period. Here, the number of control beams and the number of the re-lit beams are set to a number, satisfying prescribed conditions, according to a state of whether the number of all the beams is number 2<SP>n</SP>of beams or an odd number of beams.
