PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-combustible separator having shut-down characteristics and to provide a microporous membrane suitable for the separator. SOLUTION: A polyolefinic microporous membrane is characterized as having 0.5-75μm thickness, 30-85% porosity and <135°C permeability cutoff temperature (shut-down temperature) and comprising an ultrahigh-molecular weight polyolefin having≥7×10<SP>5</SP>Mw (weight-average molecular weight), an LDPE (low-density polyolefin) and a non-combustibility imparting substance containing phosphorus. The separator for batteries is composed of the polyolefinic microporous membrane. A phosphazene compound, a phosphonate compound and a phosphinate compound are preferred as the non-combustibility imparting substance. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
