PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform mounting work of a vibration suppressing rail for suppressing vibration caused by variations in speed of a roller provided at a step of a passenger conveyor with high precision and excellent workability. SOLUTION: In this positioning method, teeth 1a, 1b, 1c of a driving sprocket 3 of the passenger conveyor are positioned at predetermined positions for the center of rotation of the driving sprocket 3, the driving sprocket 3 is fixed in this condition to prevent its rotation, and a cut-out part 10c and tapered faces 10d, 10e of the positioning tool 10 are engaged with the teeth 1a, 1b, 1c to position a height direction positioning part 10a and a length direction positioning part 10b for the driving sprocket 3. A roller rolling face 5a of the vibration suppressing rail 5 and one end of the vibration suppressing rail 5 are abutted on the height direction positioning part 10a and the length direction positioning part 5b, respectively, to position the vibration suppressing rail 5 in the directions of height and length.
