摘要 The invention relates to a method for operating an emission control system comprising a particulate filter (4) for eliminating soot from the exhaust gas of a self-igniting internal combustion engine and an oxidation catalyst (3) that is mounted upstream of the particulate filter (4) and is used for removing the soot collected in the particulate filter (4). The aim of the invention is to create a method for operating an emission control system and a corresponding device which allow the total emissions of an internal combustion engine to be reduced. Said aim is achieved by oxidizing CO and HC to H<SUB>2</SUB>O and CO<SUB>2</SUB> in the oxidation catalyst (3) in order to increase the exhaust gas temperature and thus burn the soot collected in the particulate filter (4) while the oxidation rate of the oxidation catalyst (3) can be varied and/or the oxidation catalyst (3) can be disconnected from the exhaust manifold.
