Fuelling apparatus for a fast reactor comprising a core 20 in a primary vessel 10 filled with molten sodium 12, includes a ramp B extending from a fuelling station 22 to a shielded lock chamber A receiving a switching tube 46 pivotally mounted at its upper end. The tube 46 may be moved from the Fig. 1 position in which it is aligned with the ramp B to an alternative position in which it is aligned with a ramp B<SP>1</SP> leading to a recovery station C. A carriage (Fig. 4, not shown) for receiving a fuel assembly is movable along the ramps B, B<SP>1</SP> and tube 46 by a hoist (Fig. 6, not shown) disposed in an enclosure 80. A jack in the enclosure 80 imparts a small axial motion to the tube 46 so that it may be coupled to or uncoupled from the ends of the ramps B, B<SP>1</SP> when it is pivoted about its upper end by means of a traverser 54 movable along rails 56. In operation, the fuel assembly carriage is lowered down ramp B<SP>1</SP> into the recovery station and a new fuel assembly is lowered through a valve 42 into the carriage, the latter then being raised into the tube 46. The tube 46 is aligned with ramp B and the carriage is lowered into fuelling station 22. A rotary arm 18 mounted in a rotary plug 16 removes the fuel assembly from the carriage and places the assembly in the core 20. A spent fuel assembly which has been previously removed from the core by the arm 18 and left to cool off in a store in the vessel 10 is now placed by the arm in the carriage and the latter is returned to the station C.</p> |
