A VARIABLE RESISTOR FOR A HIGH VOLTAGE IS PROVIDED IN WHICH CONNECTIONS AT A HIGH VOLTAGE OUTPUT PORTION CAN BE MADE WITH SOLDERED PORTIONS REDUCED OR COMPLETELY ELIMINATED AND WHICH CAN BE MADE COMPACT. A CAPACITOR CONNECTION TERMINAL (6) IS MOUNTED ON AN INSULATED SUBSTRATE (2) BY CLAMPING THE SUBSTRATE WITH A U-SHAPED SUBSTRATE CLAMPING PORTION (61). PROTRUDING PORTIONS (63) PROVIDED ON THE SUBSTRATE CLAMPING PORTION (61) CONTACT AN OUTPUT ELECTRODE (21) ON THE INSULATED SUBSTRATE (2) TO BE IN CONNECTION THERETO, AND A CAPACITOR IS CONNECTED BY CLAMPING ONE OF LEAD WIRES THEREOF WITH A LEAD WIRE CLAMPING PORTION (64) PROVIDED ON A CAPACITOR CONNECTION PORTION (62) PROTRUDING FROM A REAR SURFACE OF THE INSULATED SUBSTRATE (2). OUTPUT LINE CONNECTION TERMINALS (8) ARE CONTAINED AND SECURED SUCH THAT A SPRING PORTION (82) THEREOF IS URGED INTO CONTACT WITH THE SUBSTRATE CLAMPING PORTION (61). A CORE WIRE OF AN OUTPUT LINE INSERTED THROUGH AN OUTPUT LINE RETAINING CYLINDER (12A) IS CLAMPED BY CLAMPING PIECES (81) OF THE OUTPUT LINE CONNECTION TERMINAL (8) TO PREVENT THE OUTPUT LINE FROM COMING OUT THE OUTPUT LINE CONNECTION TERMINAL (8).
