[Also in Division F2] A boring machine has three spindles 13, 16, 19 rotatably mounted in a head 11, and driven by pulleys 31. Each spindle is mounted at one end in a sleeve 15 by ball bearings 42, 43, and at the other end by a hydrodynamic bearing. Each of the latter bearings comprises two sets of staggered lands 53 on an enlarged portion 52 of the spindles, supplied with fluid from a reservoir 23, through a flexible pipe 35, an axial bore 32, and radial bores 54. A boring bar 29 is connected to each spindle and carries a single point tool 17, the end of bore 32 being plugged at 33. Sleeve 15 is connected to the head 47 of the spindle by an annular tongue and groove 48, 49. |
