A releasable fastening for a luggage case or the like consists of a cover plate 10, and a two-armed lever 36 whose arms 37, 38 lie respectively parallel with and across the edge of a flap C of the case, so that a thickened bolt portion 62 integral with arm 38 can be engaged with and disengaged from a keeper 34 secured to another flap D of the case by rocking of the lever about a pivot 22 carried by the cover plate 10 which is secured by integral studs 16, 18 to the flap C, the cover plate 10 being shaped to provide two arms 12, 14 which overlie portions of the lever arms 37, 38 such that projecting portions along the lengths of the lever arms 37, 38 can be manipulated to rock the lever between engaged and disengaged positions. The lever is held in these positions by a detent formed on a leaf spring 54 secured to the cover plate, the detent engaging one or other of two recesses 60 formed in the lever. Flanges 48 on the lever arms co-operate with flanges 52 on a bottom plate 42 which is secured to the cover plate by studs 46, thereby limiting 'travel of the lever in each direction. The bottom plate supports a conventional locking- mechanism comprising a slidingly mounted resilient locking bolt 68 which, when operated by a key inserted into a barrel (66, Figs. I and 5, not shown) rotatable in the cover plate, is movable from the locked position shown in Fig. 2, in which it interferes with a blocking lug 70 carried by the lever arm 37, to an unlocked position in which lug 70 is free to move around the end of the bolt. An extension 24 of the arm 12 of the cover plate is adapted to fit within the end of a piece of cylindrical trim which is fitted around the suitcase and be secured thereto by a pin inserted in a transverse aperture 26, whereby the fastening forms a continuation of the trim.</p> |
