A lathe tool or the like, carried in a tool holder is mounted on a slide member of the lathe or like machine and fine adjustments of the setting of the tool can be made by causing movement of the tool holder relative to the slide by hydraulic or pneumatic means arranged to act on the tool holder against resilient means connected to the slide. In a lathe, Fig. 1, fluid pressure applied to a diaphragm 11 causes displacement against the pressure of spring 16 of a toolholder 3 and tool 4, proportionally to the pressure applied, the tool holder 3 being suspended by flat spring members 6, 7 from a frame 8 mounted on a base-plate 2 on a tool slide 1. Fluid pressure operated clamping means 19 serve to clamp the tool holder 3 releasably against a post 24. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) in which step-by-step movement of the tool holder can be made so as to adjust the tool holder over larger distances two clamping devices are provided one to clamp the housing of the fluid pressure diaphragm means and the other to clamp a stem part connected to the tool holder, the clamping devices being operable alternately by fluid pressure or mechanical means. Separate diaphragm-type fluid pressure operated means adapted to provide coarse adjustment of the tool holder may be connected to the housing of the fine adjustment fluid pressure means (Fig. 4, not shown). |
