Method for cleaning cylinders of a printing machine using an automated washing machine comprises influencing the start and/or selection of the washing discharge program by the signals of a sensor (3) which scans the surface of the cylinder or printed material (4) leaving the cylinder, estimating the degree of dirt of the cylinder and/or temporary progression of the sensor signals from the sensor signals and selecting the washing discharge program. An independent claim is also included for a device for cleaning cylinders of a printing machine using an automated washing machine. Preferred Features: The start and/or selection of a washing discharge program is influenced by the signals of the sensor in such a way that the start of the washing program is delayed or automatically carried out only from a prescribed or pre-adjusted threshold value of the degree of dirt.
