The concentration of the aqueous electrolyte e.g. KOH, in a fuel cell 6, such as one operated with hydrogen and oxygen, is prevented from dropping below a predetermined value during operation by means of a storage chamber 1 containing a saturated solution of electrolyte 3 over solid electrolyte 2, which is connected to the electrolyte chamber 5 of the cell by means of a diffusion duct 4, the electrolyte diluted by the reaction water being allowed to leave the cell by means of an overflow duct 8 which leads to a collecting vessel 7. In another embodiment the electrolyte chamber is connected at both ends to the storage chamber by means of diffusion ducts. A battery may be made up of a plurality of the above combinations wherein the overflow ducts all open into a common receptacle. |
