The invention relates to a process for the sulphurization of a metal catalyst for hydrotreating the hydrocarbons by treating the catalyst with a sulphurization agent to which an ester of the orthophthalic acid is admixed. The ester has a structure corresponding to the general formula I. The sulphurized catalyst is employed in the hydrotreatment of hydrocarbons.
