The invention relates to a process for preparing methyl (2E, 4Z) -2,4- decadienoate identified in literature as a minor component of the sexual feromone of the Pityogenes Chalcographus species. According to the invention, the process consists in the Witting condensation reaction of 1-hexanal with the phosphonium salt of methyl bromocrotonate, the purity of the final product as well as of the intermediate products being of more than 80%.
