A Cleaner Device for Cleaning Residue from the Cutting Edge of a Rotary Disc Type Cutter

A device for cleaning the side faces surfaces adjacent the cutting edge of a rotary disc cutter 14, e.g. the cutter of a continuous filter rod cut-off, comprises a mounting block 38 spaced radially outwardly from the cutting edge of the cutter 14, a blade holder 44 connected with and extending inwardly from the mounting block 38 in the direction of the cutter 14, a pair of generally flat, flexible cleaner blades 60, 62 carried on the holder 44 and extending therefrom along opposite side faces of the cutter 14, each blade 60, 62 having a dressing edge spacedly confronting a portion of the surface of a corresponding face adjacent the cutting edge of the cutter 14, the holder 44 being rotatable on the block 38 about an axis perpendicular to the axis about which the cutter 14 rotates whereby rotation of the holder 44 in each of two opposite directions moves the dressing edges of the respective blades 60, 62 into cleaning position wherein they contact the corresponding faces of the cutter 14. The blades 60, 62 are adjustably held in slots (64, 66) in the holder 44 by means of set screws 70 and chamfer ended plugs 74. The holder 44 also includes a cutter disc entry slot 120 and is fixed to a shaft 46 which extends through a sleeve 48 retained in a bore in the block 38. A slot 56 in the shaft 46 carries a blade spring 86 which spring biases the holder 44 in a neutral position with neither blade 60, 62 in contact with the cutter disc 14. Rotation of the holder 44, to bring one or other of the blades 60, 62 into contact with its respective side of the cutter disc 14, may be effected manually by means of a handle (98) attached thereto or automatically by means of an air cylinder unit (155). The lower end of the block 38 may be bored to connect an opening 112 with a fitting 114 that carries a flexible conduit (116) for supplying a cooling medium to the cutter disc 14. Where a cooling medium system is not used, a vacuum cleaning arrangement (Fig. 8 not shown) may be used for gathering the scrapings removed in the cleaning operation.
