The present invention relates to a nucleic acid construct having a nucleic acid molecule configured to silence threonine aldolase expression. The present invention also relates to a construct containing a nucleic acid molecule encoding a threonine aldolase and a mitochondrial targeting sequence. Expression vectors, host cells, plants, and plant seeds transformed with the nucleic acid constructs of the present invention are also disclosed. Animal feed and foodstuff containing the transformed plant seeds are disclosed. Methods of increasing threonine and isoleucine content in plants are also disclosed. Further, a method of making a mutant plant having increased levels of seed threonine compared to that of a non-mutant plant is also disclosed.
