A synthetic hydrocarbon power transmission oil consisting predominantly of dialkyl benzenes, prepared by the alkylation of benzene with a chlorinated normal C 10 - C 13 paraffin and fractional distillation of the product, has the following characteristics : gravity API 28-33 ; viscosity-centistokes at 100‹ F., 20-30, centistokes at 200‹ F., 3À8-4À9 ; viscosity index 70-100; flash point above 400‹ F. pour point (ASTM) below -70‹ F.; boiling range 650- 760‹ F. The alkylation may be effected at 30- 150‹ F. in the presence of alkylation catalysts such as AlCl 3 and HF. The power transmission oil fraction may be purified and decolorized in one or more of the following steps: SO 3 treatment followed by washing and neutralization ; extraction with a selective solvent such as furfural, phenol or dichloroethyl ether; contact with an absorbent earth. The oil may comprise by wt. Dialkyl benzene 40-60% Dialkyl tetralin 15-25% Dialkyl diphenyl 10-15% Unidentified hydrocarbons 10-17% Optional additives to the transmission oil include phenolic antioxidants (e.g. ditertiary butyl phenol, polybutylated bisphenol A, octylated diphenyl amines, alkylphenol ethers, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, and 2,6-ditertiarybutylparacresol), tricresyl phosphate, an oil soluble polymer viscosity index improver of M.W. 10,000-20,000, and polybutene. The oil may be blended with compatible fluids such as natural petroleum oils, di-2-ethyl hexyl sebacate, trimethylol propane pelargonate, pentaerythritol heptonoate, polyphenyl ethers, hexyl dicresyl phosphate, silicate esters and silicones. |
