The device has a column (1) supporting the body of a headrest on a backrest of a vehicle seat. The column is slidingly connected to a locking mechanism, to move vertically for adjusting height of the body relative to the backrest. The column has, in lateral surface part (12), a surface zone (C) with non linear profile with which a locking plate (20A) is in frictional contact under the effect of the stress of a stressing spring (24).
