1,126,168. Copolymers with a sponge-like structure. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 20 July, 1967 [2 Aug., 1966], No. 33392/67. Headings C3C and C3P. Copolymers having a sponge-like structure are prepared by copolymerizing, in aqueous suspension and in the presence of a radicalforming catalyst, from 60 to 98% by weight of a monovinyl aromatic compound and 2 to 40% by weight of a cross-linking agent in the presence of 40 to 100% by weight, based on the monomers, of a non-ionic surface-active compound. Suitable surface-active compounds are fatty acid monoglycerides, fatty acid polyglycol esters or oxyethylated alcohols and phenols. In Example 1 commercial divinyl benzene (which includes ethyl styrene) and styrene are copolymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, oleic acid monoglyceride and aqueous gelatine solution and the resulting bead polymer is washed with water and extracted with methanol. In other examples methyl cellulose, lauryl alcohol oxyethylated with ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol reacted with ethylene oxide are used. |
