[Also in Division B8] In a franking machine adapted to print labels for attachment to postal packets, the length of label issued by the machine is controlled by a Geneva wheel (16), Fig. 1, not shown, which is rotatable alternatively one half or one complete revolution by a rotatable disc (13) having long and short pins (15, 14) which are engageable in slots in the Geneva wheel, the disc (13) being axially movable by manual control so that either all the pins or only the long pins engage with the slots. The labels are cut from a paper strip which passes around a drum 1, Fig. 2, which is rotatable on a shaft 5 by coupling a continuously rotating gear-wheel 36 thereto through a clutch comprising a sprag 2 pivoted to the gear-wheel at 37, a projection on the sprag 2 being engageable in either of two diametrically opposed notches in a disc 3 integral with the shaft 5. Operation is initiated by manual displacement of a lever 11 formed with a camming lobe 4 normally preventing engagement of the sprag with the top notch in the disc 3, so that the shaft 5 is driven, the drum 1 and pin-bearing disc (13) being rotated thereby. When the long pins (15) only engage the slots of the Geneva wheel, the Geneva wheel rotates 90 degrees during the first 180 degree rotation of the shaft 5, a cam 9 mounted on a shaft 10 bearing the Geneva wheel thereby rotating from its normal position disengaging the sprag from the notch, to a position wherein the sprag remains in engagement with the notch so that the drum 1 rotates a further 180 degrees, the Geneva wheel being rotated a further 90 degrees so that the cam 9 is rotated into a position disengaging the sprag from the disc 3, so stopping rotation of the drum 1. If the short pins are engageable with the slots in the Geneva wheel, the cam 9 rotates 180 degrees during the first 180 degree rotation of the drum 1, thus disengaging the sprag 2 from the disc 3 after a half revolution of the drum. A cutter 7 mounted on the shaft 10 rotates in conjunction with the cam 9 and perforates the strip when the cam 9 engages the sprag 2. A pallet 23 having an off-centre pivot acts to burst the perforation as the strip is fed over the pallet to a printing station. Printing-rollers.-The printing cylinder 42, Fig. 3, includes a printing segment 41 which is pivotable about a shaft 43 into and out of operative position. When long strips are being issued, a cam 44 is positioned to lift the segment 41 into operative position, so that a slogan may be printed on the label. If a short label is selected, an electromagnet 50 is automatically energized, so that an armature 51 thereof is brought into a position wherein it can engage a tooth 52 on the shaft of the cam 44 as the printing cylinder rotates. The cam is thereby rotated into a position permitting the printing segment 41 to retract into the printing cylinder. On selection of long labels, the armature returns to a position in line with a tooth 47, engagement with which lifts the segment 41 into operative position. Stopping and starting arrangements.-A label fed to the printing station is detected by an arm of a switch (67), Fig. 4 (not shown), thus energizing an electromagnet (113), Fig. 5 (not shown), which initiates operation of a one revolution clutch mechanism which rotates the printing cylinder 42 one revolution. Type-selecting mechanism.-Type wheels 210, Fig. 6, are mounted in the printing cylinder 42, Fig. 3, about an axis transverse to the cylinder axis. A setting wheel 203 is coupled to each type wheel through a ring gear 204 having internal teeth meshing with a pinion driving a screw 205 which is linked by a nut 206 to a rack 207 driving the type wheel. A plurality of ring gears 204 are coaxially mounted, each meshing with one of a plurality of coaxial setting wheels, the screws 205 being located at different angular positions on their respective ring gears. Franking machine totalizer mechanisms.- The total value printed by the machine is indicated by a totalizer (Fig. 7, not shown) which includes a wheel coupled to the printing cylinder and having radially movable teeth of which a preselected number engage a gearwheel (302) for rotating a register wheel an amount corresponding to the value printed. The gear-wheel (302) is prevented from overrunning by a spring-urged pawl (308), the pawl (308) being positively held in engagement with the gear-wheel (302), after the last tooth has rotated the gear-wheel by a lever (306) urged into position by a cam (303).
