Reagent for detecting or absorbing oxygen comprises a metal complex covalently bound to the surface of a solid support, where the complex changes color as a function of the degree of oxidation of the metal. - Independent claims are also included for: - (1) producing a reagent as above by activating an inorganic support by immersion in an acid solution, washing and air drying; grafting a trialkoxysilane-functional organic chain onto the support by immersion in an ethanol solution at room temperature; synthesizing a ligand in situ by adding a ''molecular condensation entity'' to the organic chain; and coordinating a metal compound to the ligand by immersion in an ethanol solution at room temperature under an inert atmosphere; - (2) oxygen detecting or absorbing device comprising a reagent as above.
