Tetracyano-1,4-dithiin is prepared by contacting an alkali metal or tetraalkylammonium salt of cyanodithioformic acid with chlorine, bromine, thionyl chloride or sulphuryl chloride at not above 75 DEG C. in an essentially anhydrous organic solvent in which the cyanodithioformate salt is stable; specified types of solvent are N,N-dialkyl carboxylic acid amides, N-alkyl lactams, nitriles, ethers, cyclic ethers, ketones, sulphides, sulphoxides and sulphones, and many particular solvents are listed. The cyanodithioformate salt may be prepared by reacting an alkali metal or tetraalkylammonium cyanide with carbon disulphide in a solvent which is a carboxylic acid amide or lactam having no hydrogen on the amido nitrogen, preferred solvents being N,N-dimethylformamide and N,N-dimethylacetamide. Specifications 891,093 and 893,589 are referred to. |
