A fuel cell (10) having separators (1, 2) facing each other with a power generation reaction section (5) in between, in which each of the separators (1, 2) has a gas flow path (3, 4), a gas flow path partition rib (6), and a projection (7) in the gas flow path. A first separator (1, 2) that is at least either of the separators (1, 2) facing each other with the power generation reaction section (5) in between has a holding rib (8) instead of the projection (7), the holding rib (8) being provided in that region (S) of the first separator (1, 2) which faces the gas flow path partition rib (6) of the second separator (2, 1), which is the separator facing the first separator (1, 2), the holding rib (8) holding, in cooperation with the gas flow path partition rib (6) of the second separator (2, 1), the power generation reaction section (5). In the region (S) of the first separator (1, 2), the area (S1) of contact of the holding rib (8) with the power generation reaction section (5) is set greater than the area (S2) of contact of the power generation reaction section (5) with the projection (7) provided without forming the holding rib (8) in the region (S) of the first separator (1, 2).
