The invention relates to a device which can recognise the colour of an object and which can be used to obtain good resolution over the entire spectrum and a reproducible result regardless of the type of surface and whether or not it is textured. According to the invention, the device comprises: a photodiode (13) which is divided into three different sections or three photodiodes, each of which is equipped with filters through which only one of the base colours can pass, i.e. red, green and blue, and which supply three electric signals that are representative of the red, green and blue components of the colour of the object; a variable-gain amplifier (16) and a microcontroller (17) which is programmed, for example, to control same such that it applies an independent, variable, automatic amplification to each signal originating from the photodiode (13).
