Carriers 44 on a turret 40 move selected containers C out of their path on a conveyer 32 and upwards into engagement with a sealing head (46) (Fig. 3, not shown), each non-selected container C moving on to a support 120 of the turret 40, there being deflecting means carried by the turret to deflect the non-selected container from the support and so maintain it in the conveyer path. In Fig. 2 alternate containers are selected, the remaining containers being fed to a second turret 42 similar to the turret 40. The selected containers are engaged between a semicircular shaped recess on a plate 208 rotating with the head 40 and a similar recess on a wheel 211. The heads 40, 42, wheel 211 and a recessed wheel 186 co-operating with the head 42 are all driven by gearing (Fig. 5, not shown) in synchronism with the conveyer 32. The non- selected containers arrive at the head 42 in time to be engaged by a recess 208 having a profile of combined concave and convex form which is adapted to deflect the container of the support 120 and thus maintain it on the conveyer 32. In a modification (Fig. 19), the non-selected containers C2, C4 . . . are engaged by an arm 233 which is pivotally mounted on the platform 120 by a pin 236. The arm 233 is deflected by the action of an arm 242 which at one end carries a pin 239 engaging a slot 238 in the arm 233. At its other end the arm 242 is rigidly connected to a shaft 243 which is connected to an arm 244. The latter has at its other end a cam follower 245 which rides in a circular cam track 246 formed in a fixed part of the apparatus. This has a reduced diameter section which causes the arm 244 to be deflected at the appropriate moment. An alternative form of this modification is also described (Figs. 12-16, not shown). |
