1,144,497. Nickel-treated oxides. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 18 May, 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 41538/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] An inorganic oxide such as silica, magnesia or alumina which contains a small amount of hydrogen, possibly as hydroxyl groups on the surface, is treated with an alkaline solution to replace the hydrogen atoms by alkali metal or ammonium, and then with a solution containing nickel nitrate, chloride or sulphate to replace the alkali or ammonium by nickel. The oxide is then washed to remove uncombined nickel. Alternatively the alkali and nickel treatments may be combined by using a solution of nickel formate in aqueous ammonia. The product contains from 0À1 to 5% of nickel. The material may then be hydrogenated to reduce the nickel to the metallic, catalytically active form. |
