<p>An external electrode fluorescent lamp (1) has external electrodes (4) at opposite ends. The portions (3) provided with the external electrodes (4) are bent so that their axes are orthogonal to the axis of a light emitting section (2). A conventional external electrode fluorescent lamp (11) is not bent in its portions (13) provided with external electrodes (14). Since the external electrodes (4, 14) of the external electrode fluorescent lamps (1, 11) serve concurrently as holding sections for the florescent lamps (1, 11), the axial length (D) is made greater than the outer diameter (d) so as to provide sufficient strength. The width dimension (d) of the frame section of the fluorescent lamp (1) of the invention when mounted on a backlight unit is smaller than the width dimension (D) of the frame section of the conventional fluorescent lamp (11). Therefore, the effective light emitting area of the backlight unit can be enlarged.</p> |
