PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an austenitic stainless steel having resistance to both wet corrosion and high-temperature dry corrosion in a chloride environment having the highest temperature of 600 to 700°C, and in an environment where heating and cooling are repeated. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel having excellent high temperature salt damage resistance has a composition containing, by mass, 0.003 to 0.03% C, 2.0 to 4.0% Si, 0.05 to 2.0% Mn,≤0.03% P, 10 to 16% Ni, 16 to 20% Cr, 1.0 to 4.0% Mo and 0.03 to 0.2% N in the ranges satisfying the inequalities (1) to (3), and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, wherein Si+Cr+3Mo≥23 (1), 4Si+Mo≥12 (2), and 10≤2.1Si+1.4Cr+1.4Mo-39(C+N)-0.6Mn-1.3Ni≤16 (3).
