In a urea synthesis process from ammonia and carbon dioxide, ammonium carbamate in the liquid product stream is decomposed in a plurality of stages at successively lower pressures to form a series of off-gases, each off-gas from each stage is adiabatically compressed to the pressure of the next higher stage and mixed with the liquid product stream at that stage, the resulting gas being separated from the liquid stream as the off-gas from that stage, said gas from the highest stage of compression being delivered directly to urea synthesis. Carbon dioxide may be added to the off-gas from the last decomposition at the lowest pressure prior to compression and the mixtures of off-gas and liquid product stream may be further heated prior to separation of the off-gas. |
