[Also in Divisions C3 and G2] An emulsion comprises water and benzyl alcohol in a ratio by weight of from 1.1:1 to 25:1 and an emulsifying agent which is one or more of the following substances: (i) a water-soluble polymeric carbohydrate, (ii) a water-soluble polymeric amide, (iii) a watersoluble derivative of a polymeric carbohydrate, (iv) a water-soluble derivative of a polymeric amide. The benzyl alcohol may be emulsified in water or the water may be dispersed in the benzyl alcohol. The emulsifying agent may be a starch derivative, a Guar gum, a cellulose derivative (e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose or carboxymethyl-hydroxyethyl cellulose) or a protein (e.g. gelatin used in example 12). The composition may also contain hydroxylamine sulphate in solution in the aqueous medium. |
