PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording apparatus having a high ink usage rate and an ink supply mechanism which can maintain a desired a negative pressure. SOLUTION: It has a recording head 11 for ejecting an ink toward the recording medium, an ink tank 10 for retaining the ink to be ejected from the recording head 11, and a negative pressure maintaining valve 12 provided in the middle of the ink supply path between the ink tank 10 and the recording head 11. The negative pressure maintaining valve 12 always maintains the ink supply path to a negative pressure state, and a flow inlet 23 is opened only while the negative pressure value is not lower than a predetermined value so as to open the ink supply path.
