PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid increase in the size of a lens group including a shift group by constituting the lens group positioned near an aperture diaphragm of two partial groups and shifting one of the partial groups so as to perform image shift. SOLUTION: The zoom lens has at least three lens groups, that is, a negative lens group G2 having negative refractive power, the shift lens group G3 and a positive lens group G4 having positive refractive power, which are arrayed in order from an object side. In changing the position of the lens from a wide angle end state to a telephoto end state, at least the negative lens group and the positive lens group are moved to narrow a space between the negative lens group and the shift lens group and change a space between the shift lens group and the positive lens group. The shift lens group is constituted of at least two partial groups L31 and L32, and the aperture diaphragm S is arranged between the two partial groups, then either of partial groups L31 and L32 is shifted in a direction nearly perpendicular to an optical axis so as to shift an image.
