PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metallic thin film type magnetic recording medium wherein high recording density and thinness are attained, satisfactory rigidity is secured and stable recording and reproduction characteristics can be obtained. SOLUTION: In the metallic thin film type magnetic recording medium 100 having reinforcing layers 2a and 2b constituted of a material selected from a metal, a semimetal, an alloy, their oxides and composites on both surfaces of a long non-magnetic supporting body 1 and provided with a magnetic layer 3 constituted of a ferromagnetic metallic thin film on the reinforcing layer 2a of one surface and a back coat layer 5 on the reinforcing layer 2b of the other surface, a reinforcement coefficient obtained by multiplying total film thickness of the reinforcing layers 2a and 2b by a Young's modulus of the material which constitutes the reinforcing layers 2a and 2b is≥22,700 Pa m and a B/M ratio obtained by dividing the film thickness of the reinforcing layer 2b on the back coat layer 5 side by the total film thickness of the magnetic layer 3 and the reinforcing layer 2a on the magnetic layer 3 side is 0.25 to 2.22.
