PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of slippage defect and the like and to obtain a coil in a good winding appearance during winding of a strip such as a hot rolled steel strip. SOLUTION: When pinching a strip passing through a roll gap by pinch rolls, the roll gap is narrowed by moving the rolls with a cylinder mechanism and back tension is applied on the strip by controlling a circumferential speed of rotation of the pinch roll to be reduced to v-βthat is smaller than a transfer speed v of the strip. Then the gap is adjusted by moving the roll using a gear mechanism until a current value of a pinch roll driving motor is adjusted and stabilized in a range i±Δi where i is a setting value.
