<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To monitor and adjust the light intensity for each LED in an LED illumination system. <P>SOLUTION: A light source comprises a first light source component (400) having N LEDs (401-406), a photodetector (411-416), and a light redirector (410). Here, N is greater than 1. Each LED has a light emitting chip in a package. The light emitting chip emits light in the forward direction and the lateral direction. The light generated in the forward direction is determined by a drive signal coupled to the LED. Part of the light in the lateral direction is emitted from the package. The light redirector (410) is arranged such that part of the light in the lateral direction that is emitted from the package of each LED is scattered on the photodetector. The photodetector generates N intensity signals and each intensity signal has an amplitude relating to the intensity of the light emitted in the lateral direction by the corresponding LED among the LEDs. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
