PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of extending a life of a laser light source and preventing a temperature of an inner section of the apparatus from rising without increasing the cost. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus forms an image by modulating image data by means of a grating light valve (GLV). In order to prevent lowering of the life of the laser light source and deterioration of quality of an image due to droop, the image forming apparatus is equipped with a control means that makes a current value of the light source to be a bias current smaller than a drive current from the drive current or to be zero when all of the plurality of pieces of modulation data for modulating the GLV are off.
