1,182,096. Ad;ustable hydropneumatic supports. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. 9 Feb., 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 6452/68. Heading B8J. An adjustable support, as for a table (not shown), comprises a cylinder 1 divided by a piston 3 into a lower compartment 19 filled with liquid and an upper compartment containing liquid and compressed air. Unscrewing piston-rod 11 slightly from the piston 3 allows liquid to pass through valve member 7 between compartments 18, 19 while at the same time releasing pressure on 0-ring 9 through pressure ring 8. Thus, when unlocked for adjustment, sliding friction between the 0-ring 9 and the cylinder 1 is considerably reduced. A throttling device comprising a ring 16, a notched disc 17 loaded by a spring 15 reduces the speed at which the rod 11 can move inwards of the cylinder 1, without impeding motion in the other direction. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates a simpler modification without a throttling device. the 0-ring 9 constituting the valve.
