The protocol detection mode used in the portable object comprises the following steps: a) an initial signal is received from the interface device after transmission of a response (E2) when (E1) the portable object is connected; the initial signal is sampled in the portable object according to at least one of the first and second speeds associated with the respective first and second protocols; c) at least one resulting sample of a sampling signal is compared to at least one key protocol condition proper to one of the first and second protocols (E4); d) the data exchanged according to one of the first and second communication protocols is treated in the portable object according to the result of said comparison. The portable object can be a chip card or a chip key.
