PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which can maintain a low error rate and is excellent in reliability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has, at least on one surface of a nonmagnetic support, a reinforcement layer consisting of at least one material selected from a group comprising metal, metalloid, alloy, these oxide and compound; a smoothing layer; a magnetic layer in which ferromagnetic powder is distributed in binder in this order. The smoothing layer is preferably the layer in which the layer containing the compound polymerized by radiation is hardened by the radiation. Between the smoothing layer and the magnetic layer, a nonmagnetic layer, in which the nonmagnetic powder is distributed in the binder, may be disposed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
