PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber with a volume compensation chamber on the outer periphery of a cylinder, wherein a pressure side damping force control device can be attached. SOLUTION: In the hydraulic shock absorber 10, first and second seal portions 61A, 61B of a diaphragm 60 are mounted on the outer peripheries of first and second partition wall portions 53A, 53B of the cylinder 11, a straight cylindrical case 70 is fitted to the outer peripheries of the first and second seal portions 61A, 61B of the diaphragm 60, the volume compensation chamber 65 consisting of a reservoir oil chamber 65A and a gas chamber 65B is provided on the inner periphery side of the cylindrical case 70, an oil passage 56 via which the reservoir oil chamber 65A is communicated with a piston side oil chamber 38A is formed in a bottom 52 of the cylinder 11, and the pressure side damping force control device 90 is mounted in the oil passage 56 in an externally operable manner.
