PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device for an automatic transmission having a higher degree of freedom in layout with the reduced size of a select lever and obtaining select lever operating force property as required while allowing range change-over operation in failure with mechanical connection between the select lever and a select position change-over device. SOLUTION: A controller 3 has a drive command value computing part 32 for computing a drive command value so that an actuation position follows an operation position, and a target change-over part 31. The target change-over part 31 changes over a target which the actuation position follows into the operation position equivalent to a select residence position located closer to the operation position when the operation position comes closer to either of the select residence positions.
