PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a potentially crimpable meta-aramid fiber capable of easily actualizing the crimps by treatment conditions such as dyeing and excellent in quality and process stability in spinning, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The potentially crimpable meta-aramid fiber having properties of actualizing crimps of 6-14/25 mm crimp number and 7-16% crimp rate by heat treatment in 120°C warm water for 60 min is obtained by treatment of an amide-based polar solvent solution of meta-aramid, containing 0.1-20 wt.% layered clay mineral based on the meta-aramid weight and having 15-25 wt.% polymer content, which treatment comprises (1) spinning and coagulating in a water-based coagulation bath containing an inorganic salt, (2) washing the coagulated fiber in a washing bath for water washing, (3) drawing in a warm water bath at a rate of 3.5-6.0 times, (4) removing, in a warm water bath, the inorganic salt in the fiber and (5) treating by relaxation heat treatment in vapor of 0.10-0.40 MPa vapor pressure at a relaxation ratio of 1.0-1.5 times maximum relaxation rate for 1 s to 1 min relaxation treatment time.
