PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an index device compacted in its height in a state that a cam follower is replaceable. SOLUTION: A lock pin 16 moving to keep the cam follower 9 in a fixed state or a non-fixed state with respect to an output shaft 4 is constituted in such manner that its moving direction is approximately orthogonal to the axial direction of the output shaft 4. Thus a space for moving the lock pin 16 can be made completely unnecessary in the axial direction of the output shaft 4 in replacing the cam follower 9. As a result, the axial direction of the output shaft 4, that is, the height direction of the index device 1 can be remarkably compacted while keeping replaceability of the cam follower 9.
