<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display, wherein highly superior viewing angle compensation is achieved, the contrast in an oblique direction is superior, and the thickness can be reduced. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display is equipped with a liquid crystal cell, having a pair of substrates of which the one has a color filter disposed thereon, and a liquid crystal layer as a display medium disposed between the substrates, and an optical compensation element, having at least an optical compensation layer.
