PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a variation in light and darkness on a screen from being conspicuous by making a variation speed in a light quantity slow when a variation rate of average luminance of an input video signal is small. SOLUTION: The average luminance of the input video signal is calculated, when the obtained average luminance is high, the light quantity of light made incident on a light modulation element is increased and when the obtained average luminance is low, the light quantity of light is decreased to thereby prevent bright black display and to increase contrast. In addition, when a variation in the average luminance is small, a change in light quantity is controlled at low speed and when the change in a light quantity is large, a change in light quantity is controlled at high speed to prevent the light and darkness of the screen from being conspicuous.
