PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase reliability of inference of motoring pressure in an internal combustion engine to determine a combustion state. SOLUTION: This combustion state detection device for the internal combustion engine is provided with a cylinder pressure detection means in a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, a crank angle detection means for detecting a crank angle of the internal combustion engine, and an identifying means for identifying parameters. This combustion state detection means is provided with a calculation means for calculating volume of the combustion chamber based on the crank angle detected by the crank angle detection means and an inference means for inferring motoring pressure in the internal combustion engine by an expression including the calculated volume. This combustion state detection device is provided with an identifying means for identifying parameters in the expression based on error between pressure detected by the cylinder pressure detection means and pressure inferred by the inference means in a compression process of the internal combustion engine and a determining means for determining a combustion state based on the relation of pressure detected by the cylinder pressure detection means and pressure inferred by the inference means in a combustion process of the internal combustion engine.
